I generally prefer the psychologic embrace of character driven narratives though when plot led stories defy conventional structures, while being thematically opulent to achieve emotional verisimilitude, then I enjoy their presence just as much. 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆 (1997) is a plot focused tale such as this. Now, let's tackle this movie's worrisome component. I wish that the loner (Me-Mania) wasn't designed to be physically ugly (by society's standards) while being an openly creepy stalker since the representation can be stigmatizing to socially awkward loners who are of good character. My criticism is a light one since I see no intention for that character to be a representation of every loner, no matter his or her appearance (merely visual convenience to add to the throughline of the film's existential anxiety). Let's move on to the other aspects of this sobering classic.
This avant-garde edited yet logically plotted story effuses melancholy and dread as it mostly places you within the perspective of the emotionally sensitive main character (Mima) even as her mind increasingly confuses reality with make-believe, due to the systemic abuse of a male gaze oriented media system (being sensitive isn't a personality flaw, it merely makes one more susceptible to the horror of people who commodify human beings). 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆 condemns the film, television, and modeling magazine industries' dehumanization of womens' souls through the exploitative objectification of their bodies (if they're young and slim) or rejecting their dreams (if they become older and heavier). The film also seethes at fans' fetishization of the music industry's manufactured and enforced personas of young adult female pop idols as being nearly perpetually euphoric and forever childlike in their sexual naivety. 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆 is also a narrative with twists galore (aided by seamless scene transitions) which will have first-time viewers analyzing what is happening in its real world and what is delusion, right until the finale which reveals the truth that's been bubbling underneath all along.
