Fortune led me to a masterpiece last night. 𝑨 𝑺𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆 (also known as 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒆) is an intimately scaled yet monumentally nuanced emotional and empathically psychological character-driven narrative where moments of piercing tragedy and painful healing are allowed to breathe. This is a multi-faceted manifestation of art which bravely and skillfully humanizes schoolmates who bully without excusing or sacrificing the horrors of enacting torment upon souls, much less romanticizing that behavior. Alas, no artpiece is without room to reach perfection so here come my nitpicks: There is a supporting character who randomly appears in the beginning and end of the film for less than a minute, with little explanation, as well as a patient who manages to leave a hospital without resistance. Truly, those are the only constructive critiques which I have and those are difficult to register when the aforementioned elements are enveloped in a masterclass movie. I must continue proclaiming the film's excellence: Besides displaying the tragic cycle of bullying, in various forms, the artists of 𝑨 𝑺𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆 unequivocally display their love for real-life individuals who are afflicted with mental illnesses. They do this by enveloping audience members' perspectives in those of the characters who experience the following: • Social anxiety and a perception that one's own existence doesn't matter to some people while one's life is a burden upon everyone else, despite the contradiction of reality. • Loneliness amongst friends (where one's feelings of existing social connections are absent). • The assault of depression, where resultant suicidal desires abuse some into believing that ending their own life is the answer to a seemingly hopeless and an unceasingly painful existence; while unbidden inner manipulations convince them that their very existence is toxic and that the ultimate act of selflessness is to commit suicide to free their loved ones (the film does not idealize suicide by even one iota). ~ ~ ~
That the film accomplishes delving into the depths of agonizing sorrow while still being inspirationally life affirming is an Olympic feat. I hope that I've persuaded you to experience 𝑨 𝑺𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆.
